The appointment comes after a leadership vacuum following the conclusion of the previous Board’s tenure on December 5, 2025. The state administration had been actively evaluating new leadership to ensure continued academic and institutional excellence at the autonomous Matunga-based institute.
The newly constituted Board comprises distinguished leaders from industry, academia, and professional sectors, forming a high-impact governance framework. Among the industry representatives are P. V. S. Murthy, former Global Head of Cyber Security at Tata Consultancy Services; Subrahmanian Chidambaram, Strategy Head at Cummins; and Rajan Tipnis, President of R. C. Tipnis Consulting Engineering.
From the academic domain, Professor B. E. Narkhede of IIM Mumbai has been inducted as a management nominee, strengthening strategic academic oversight. In addition, Usha Marathe, Global Delivery Partner at Capgemini, has been appointed as an industry and education expert, adding global corporate perspective to the Board.
The governance structure also includes two senior faculty members nominated by the Director of VJTI, along with representatives from the University Grants Commission and the Director of Technical Education, Maharashtra, ensuring regulatory and institutional accountability. The Director or Principal of VJTI will serve as the Member Secretary of the Board.
According to the government resolution, the Board members, including the Chairman, will serve a term of three years, while the University Grants Commission nominee will hold office for five years. Members will be entitled to travel allowances, daily allowances, and sitting fees equivalent to those applicable to Secretary-level officers of the Maharashtra Government for all Board-related responsibilities.
The reconstitution is expected to strengthen governance, enhance academic-industry collaboration, and reinforce VJTI’s position as a leading technological institute in Maharashtra.
